Super-simple ‘file it yourself’ tax returns from FreeAgent

Patting yourself on the back for tackling your self assessment forms yourself this year? And with over a week to go? (If you haven’t, this excellent crash course will help you make it on time).

Well, now filing them with HMRC is super easy – if you’ve got a FreeAgent account.  If you haven’t, you can get one here.

self_assessment_filing_screenshot_freeagentYou’ll see a new Prepare to File Online button in the self assessment section, which takes you through to a final page that highlights any missing data and encourages you to double-check the data you’ve already entered.

Then if you’re ready to go, simply hit the File online with HMRC button and enter your Government Gateway ID and password. You’ll be taken back to the self assessment section and you’ll see the return as marked as Pending. If all goes well, this will switch to Filed if the return has been successfully received by HMRC. Ta da!

FreeAgent are the first online accountancy system to introduce this, and it’s bound to make life for us feelancers a lot easier.

Anyone who currently subscribes to FreeAgent – as well as new customers who subscribe by January 31st – will be entered into a big draw and one winner will receive £5000 towards their tax bill.

Who is Alex Butler

Hello, I'm Alex Butler and I founded the KindredHQ community and blog back in 2011 after I re-started a freelance career. I LOVE freelancing and I wouldn't swop the freedom, control and joy of working for myself for anything. But I realised how much I missed the company and energy of other people - of having a team around me. So, I got a few people together one day with our laptops, a jar of coffee and some jelly babies and we sat and worked together one afternoon. We've been doing that every week in London, UK since then! I am still 100% freelance and I like to share the everyday highs and lows of being a freelancer here on the blog.
