Desk of the Week #5

I’m a clinical hypnotherapist and weight loss coach, working from home.

This is my space – in the garden. As my long career has evolved, so has the way I use the space. When my kids were little it was a shed – with a workbench, bags of apples wrapped in newspaper to keep into the winter – and LOTS of spiders.

Then I became a freelance coach and trainer, and it became my office.  A quiet retreat that put a space between me and all the chores winking at me from the main house. I couldn’t hear the front door or the house phone. Perfect. The leather topped desk from John Lewis had to be compact to fit in,  but it’s lasted well.

Now it’s my consulting room.  An oasis of peace – one young client with Tourettes quietens as soon as she sits down in the big ‘change chair’.

In between appointments, I carry on working, developing my Slimming123 weight loss programme, surrounded only by birdsong and the water tumbling into the garden pond. The desk will probably see me out . Wouldn’t swap it.

Who is Alex Butler

Hello, I'm Alex Butler and I founded the KindredHQ community and blog back in 2011 after I re-started a freelance career. I LOVE freelancing and I wouldn't swop the freedom, control and joy of working for myself for anything. But I realised how much I missed the company and energy of other people - of having a team around me. So, I got a few people together one day with our laptops, a jar of coffee and some jelly babies and we sat and worked together one afternoon. We've been doing that every week in London, UK since then! I am still 100% freelance and I like to share the everyday highs and lows of being a freelancer here on the blog.
