It takes all sorts

Are freelancers and independents simply a bunch of misfits?  Well yes and no.  But we’re happy like that, aren’t we?

We are continually amazed at the sheer diversity of freelance talent around us here at KindredHQ. Is there anything that binds us together?  We wondered what would happen if you were recruiting for someone with the ‘ideal’ personality and experience to cut it in the freelance world.

Title of Job

CEO and Director of Communication, Finance, Catering, Admin, HR and New Business

Position Description:

In this critical role at the heart of our organisation you will be responsible for absolutely everything.

Major Areas of Responsibility

These include:

  • Being a square peg in a round hole
  • Changing the world
  • Yourself
  • Everything

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

You will be expected to know a little about a lot of things, or at least be expected to turn your hand to anything.  This will help you get new clients and hold onto the existing ones who will keep getting you back in for more.

You should be self reliant as you will be in a team of one.  The range of activity that you will be involved in includes everything from fixing your own PC to keeping yourself motivated and up to date across a very broad range of activity.  And your day job.

You will be able to work independently for long periods of time (or many short periods of time will work too), without extensive procrastination.

You will be able to clearly and logically communicate ideas, which is not as easy as it sounds.

Be Teflon coated when it comes to rejection because it will happen.

Be very self-motivated and self-disciplined.  You will need to be handle insecurity, failure and exhaustion well.

Hours of work

Your hours of work are flexible. You will be required to work 24 hours at a time for a few weeks and then not at all.  Do not expect this to coincide nicely with your family life.  However, normal office hours tend to start later after breakfast TV and finish later. You will be expected to socialise in the evenings prolifically.

Work Environment

You will be expected to work at a variety of locations including your bedroom, and you need to have a stomach for huge amounts of caffeine.  You should be happy in your own company, although we expect you to mingle and collaborate with other freelancers in order that you do not go stir crazy.

You will be your own manager and you can establish your own working routine.

This job does not secure a monthly salary or benefits, and you will be paid here and there.  If at all.  Occasionally you will receive a bonus out of the blue.

However, you will be entitled to work and live in your own way, with relatively little interference. The greatest reward is being able to work on stimulating, creative projects doing work that you enjoy.

What would you add?

Who is Alex Butler

Hello, I'm Alex Butler and I founded the KindredHQ community and blog back in 2011 after I re-started a freelance career. I LOVE freelancing and I wouldn't swop the freedom, control and joy of working for myself for anything. But I realised how much I missed the company and energy of other people - of having a team around me. So, I got a few people together one day with our laptops, a jar of coffee and some jelly babies and we sat and worked together one afternoon. We've been doing that every week in London, UK since then! I am still 100% freelance and I like to share the everyday highs and lows of being a freelancer here on the blog.
