Headspace, Clerkenwell London

We are thrilled to introduce our brand new coworking partners, Headspace, where we’ll be holding pop up coworking events from November 2013.

6Headspace is a brand new (actually, beautifully refurbished old) building in the heart of London’s Clerkenwell district – right on Hatton Garden.  It’s been lovingly restored by Jonathan Rosenblatt.  Here’s what he has to say about their new space:

‘The building was built in 1907 by architects by the name of Niven & Wigglesworth. An ornate, hand-made polished brass and marble staircase which should actually be in museum, but we’re lucky to have it in our office… It’s beautiful!

You never quite know what you’ll find when you refurbish or redevelop a building. When we took over the space, the floors didn’t look particularly special, although I always knew they had potential. There were clean white walls and blue carpet tiles. In the middle of each floor were two boxed-in white plasterboard columns. On the day we signed the lease, I came to site with a builder and asked him to cut a hole in the plaster of the columns, just to see what was underneath. We found the most beautiful original marble columns that were in near perfect condoaks from acornsition. Instantly our design focus changed and we decided to make them a centrepiece of the floors.

Headspace came about after I realised there was a lack of good quality office space for small creative businesses. A lot of SME’s love to have a fully serviced space as it means they don’t have to worry about the day-to-day hassle of running an office.

We spend more waking hours in the office than we do at home, so why shouldn’t we care about how our office looks and makes us feel?

We want people to have privacy first and foremost, and we’ll provide you with everything you need so you can focus 100% on running your business. But we also believe strongly in collaboration. We’re trying to create a community of like-minded businesses in this space. We have all sorts of breakout spaces, and open kitchen areas, so our vision is that you may just meet someone doing something really interesting whilst you’re making a coffee or reading the paper in the morning on the couch. We will also put on networking events once a month, so you can meet other people that will probably be really useful to your business.

We want to ensure that the right mix of tenants are in the space together. The style of space is more geared towards creative businesses, but that can mean anything from architect practices to tech businesses, media firms to marketing agencies. We’ve already signed up a couple of really interesting tech and marketing businesses. Ideally, I’d like to see the tenant mix grow organically. That means that people will come to us through recommendations and referrals.’

Who is Alex Butler

Hello, I'm Alex Butler and I founded the KindredHQ community and blog back in 2011 after I re-started a freelance career. I LOVE freelancing and I wouldn't swop the freedom, control and joy of working for myself for anything. But I realised how much I missed the company and energy of other people - of having a team around me. So, I got a few people together one day with our laptops, a jar of coffee and some jelly babies and we sat and worked together one afternoon. We've been doing that every week in London, UK since then! I am still 100% freelance and I like to share the everyday highs and lows of being a freelancer here on the blog.
