This week Miriam Gilbert lets us in on her desk. Check out the Wild Thing….
“On the picture: well, my desk is not very tidy, I always have too many things going on at the same time. My laptop is pretty essential (who am I kidding- totally essential) and I like to be able to work from any spot I can plonk it down on. The book peeking out of my handbag was quite instrumental in getting me to change my mindset from employment to freelancing – a very recent process. And the Wild Thing hand puppet belongs to my little 1year old son. It’s based on the lovely book “Where the wild things are”, but the puppet has the knack of appearing out of nowhere in the strangest places – I have been known to put my hand in to my bag in a meeting only to find the puppet there!
A little bit about me – I am a chartered accountant and business consultant who has recently taken the plunge to go freelance. I have many years of experience working as a consultant, in-house advisor and functional director (and anything in between) for medium and large organisations in various industries. 2011 was a big year of change for me – my son arrived and I realised that plodding the corporate corridors just wasn’t for me anymore. I am very passionate about helping businesses to be the best they can be, solve their problems and make them a happy place to be. However, over the years I have become less enfranchised with the traditional consulting models – and been outright frustrated when I have been the client buying such work.
So I decided that it was time I put my money where my mouth is and set up my own consulting business – Business Schuhe (www.bizschuhe.com). I work with a loose network of professionals from senior management, finance, commercial, legal and pr & branding disciplines and we offer innovative and creative solutions to business problems, growth aspirations and innovation ambitions.
This week being a freelancer really pays off with the lovely weather – nothing beats doing your work while sipping a lovely coffee in the sun (and it there might be a refreshing pint to come later!).”
