Your clients will be aliens

In part 3 of our series ‘Your flying start in freelancing’, Colin Newlyn explains the psychology behind client relationships, and how you can start speaking the same language.

We spend a lot of time thinking about how we can secure new clients and projects that we enjoy, but all too often, having got a new client, we put them in control of the relationship. It’s as if they speak a different language.

A happy client will often hire you again and recommend you to others.  But some clients aren’t that easy to work with. Good practice with clients can help you deal with difficult people, negotiate a rate that reflects your expertise and help you enjoy your work. After all, that’s why you are your own boss!

Colin Newlyn is a freelance consultant who mentors start up businesses and helps them bring their products to market. In this video talk, he explains how you can put yourself in control by:

– getting your brief, contract and deliverables clear before you start.

– the importance of having a process that you’ve agreed

– behaving just as professionally as a big business

– not working for free.

You can find Colin on twitter, on linkedin and on his Sharp Thinking blog.

Who is Alex Butler

Hello, I'm Alex Butler and I founded the KindredHQ community and blog back in 2011 after I re-started a freelance career. I LOVE freelancing and I wouldn't swop the freedom, control and joy of working for myself for anything. But I realised how much I missed the company and energy of other people - of having a team around me. So, I got a few people together one day with our laptops, a jar of coffee and some jelly babies and we sat and worked together one afternoon. We've been doing that every week in London, UK since then! I am still 100% freelance and I like to share the everyday highs and lows of being a freelancer here on the blog.
